There have been three Green-winged orchids (Anacamptis morio) flowering nicely on the back meadow, just past their peak now. All are quite small, but have just managed to keep their heads above the general vegetation which has been skyrocketing upwards in the last week.
It would have been four, but the flower bud of one rotted off just before it started to grow upwards, unfortunately!
Also there are three Loose-flowered or Jersey orchids (Anacamptis laxiflora) fully out now. Strangely they are not the same three individual plants that flowered last year, but new individuals. The leaves of last year's plants have re-appeared, but apparently didn't feel like flowering this year.
